Rosemary Roasted Cashews for Thanksgiving, and everyone was crying for more. Very addicting. They are an Ina Garten recipe that was featured in Good Housekeeping magazine this month.

Rosemary Roasted Cashews

4 cups raw cashews (1 1/4 lbs.)

2 Tbsp. coarsely chopped fresh rosemary leaves

1 Tbsp. butter, melted

2 tsp dark brown sugar

2 tsp. kosher salt

1/2 tsp. cayenne (ground red) pepper

1. Preheat oven to 375 deg. F

2. On 18" by 12" jelly-roll pan, arrange cashews in single layer. Roast 10 to 12 minutes or until nuts are

heated through

3. Meanwhile, in large bowl, stir together rosemary, butter, sugar, salt, and cayenne until combined.

4. Add hot cashews to bowl with rosemary mixture, toss until nuts are well coated.

MY NEW HOME

I haven't been keeping up with my blogging lately because we just made a big move from the Palm Springs area in sunny California to the beautiful snowy area of Ogden, Utah. Quite a temperature change, but we are loving it. Here is a shot of our first snow looking out our front door.

Now that we are settled I will be working on the big online shopping event that is being put together by Lori Anderson scheduled to start on November 26th and run for a week. There will be 70 vendors participating, and all of them are giving away something. You will have a chance to win one of these items. PERUVIAN OPALS

Whenever I travel I am always on the lookout for places to purchase beautiful stones and pieces for my jewelry designs. On a recent trip to the quaint little town of Mendocino, I happened upon a little Rock and Gem store, and naturally it was calling my name. I slipped in and couldn't believe all the beautiful finds in there. My birthstone is opal and I am always attracted to this gem, so needless to say, I had to have a couple of strands of the beautiful Peruvian Opal. After some swift negotiations I was the proud owner of these strands. Stop by soon to see how they fit into my designs.

Peruvian Blue Opal Facts, Information and Description

Peruvian blue opal is relatively rare and is only found in the Andes mountains near San Patricio, Peru. It is a very translucent stone with color similar to the Caribbean Sea. Depending on how the stone is cut it can be clear, scenic (showing varying degrees of color) or dendritic which has black fern like inclusions.

This is the national stone of Peru and, unfortunately, in recent years dyed stones have been mass marketed by unreputable dealers as Peruvian Blue Opal. If the blue color is uneven you are probably looking at a dyed stone. Dyed stones are quite common and sell very cheaply at gem shows and on internet auctions.

Peruvian opal ranges between 5.5 and 6.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Luster: Vitreous to pearly.
Transparency: Transparent to translucent.
Fracture: Conchoidal.
Streak: White.

Folklore & Legend:

The Peruvian blue opal has soft relaxing energies. Legend says that it takes the tension out of communication and helps ideas flow freely. It softens the impact of stress from the outside world and can help one to release the trauma of old wounds. It facilitates facing the future with a tranquil healing nature.

This stone is reported to be good for quieting the mind and as an aid to sleep.

BSBP REVEAL

I am traveling with our travel trailer and lucky when we can find Wifi. I will be traveling for another two weeks, so hope to be able to get on line to visit all the fun blogs for reveal.

My partner for this BSBP is Kay Thomerson from KayzKreations.
Check my last post to see what she sent me. It included Jasper, Pearls, Rhodenite, a handcrafted copper clasp and some copper circles. I wire wrapped sections at the front to dangle the focal from, and then added two pieces of Softflex to the last wrapping so I could create the circles of beads. Kay also included some of her handmade fiber beads, but I am saving them for another design. This is what I created.

Julie Picarello Polymer Clay Method

Refreshing Lemon Jello Cake

I'm mixing up a recipe but it's not the polymer clay color kind. This is a recipe for a delicious Lemon Jello Cake. This recipe is not new. I remember having some back in the 1960's, and was delighted when I recently enjoyed it at a party I attended. It only has a few ingredients, but the flavor is wonderful. Yum!

Lemon Jello Cake

1 box of Duncan Hines Lemon Supreme Cake mix (or any Lemon Cake Mix)

1 small box lemon jello

4 eggs

3/4 cup water

3/4 cup oil

Mix these together until smooth

Pour into 13" x 9" oiled and floured cake pan

Bake at 350 for 35 min.

Icing

2 cups powdered sugar

1/4 cup lemon juice (or more as you like)

(You can also add some lemon zest if you like)

Mix this together

While the cake is still warm, make holes with a fork and then pour and spread icing on top. Cool and serve.

I am back from a fun filled vacation in Oceanside with my daughter and her family. The weather was a lot cooler than our 108 degree average here in the Coachella Valley. We did lots of interesting things like watching the start of the "Race Across America"; bicycle fundraiser for different charities. Getting in an auto accident (no one was hurt). A fun filled day at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, and riding the Coaster train to watch the Padres win at Petco Stadium. We also entertained lots of good friends while we were there.

Our weather is "HOT" here in the Palm Springs area, and my daughter was really good at finding an item at the Del Mar Fair that I am thoroughly enjoying. It is called a Mr. Cooley Towel. You wet it, wring it out and then shake it a couple of times, and you have a towel that feels cool, but does not leave you or your clothes wet. Vacationing in Oceanside, CA

I probably won't be blogging much this week as I will be vacationing in a sleepy little beach town called Oceanside. It's not too far from San Diego, and the Camp Pendelton marine base. I get to spend lots of time with family, shopping, eating, walking on the beach, visiting with friends, so you can see where I won't have much time to blog. We will also try to take in a Padres game, hopping on the Amtrak for the short ride down to San Diego. Hope you are all having a fun start to the Summer too!

I love the little Fairy pendant that she sent me. It even has a cool one cent stamp picture on the back. I'll show that later, as my batteries died in my camera so will need to go get some new ones.

Spring is Here

Spring has sprung, and Summer is on it's way. Here is my first tomato of the year. It's still a baby but will grow up to be a delicious Roma tomato. I can taste the Pasta dishes now. In fact, let me add a recipe for you right now.

Tomato, Basil, Zucchini Pasta

(serves two)

1 1/2 lbs. Roma tomatoes, peeled and diced

3 cloves garlic, minced or pressed

3 TBS Olive oil

2 TBS Basil, fresh chopped or (1 TBS dried)

Mix all these ingredients and refrigerate until ready to use. (do not freeze)

1/2 lb. of your choice of pasta

Cook pasta according to directions.

1 TBS Olive oil

1 large zucchini, cut into 1/4" cubes

Saute zucchini until al dente, add tomato mixture, lower heat and warm, do not boil. Add salt to taste.

Serve over pasta with parmesan cheese

This is what I decided to make. The large button is on a polymer clay button that I made, and will be used on a purse that I am making. The smaller buttons I made into earrings on my handmade copper earwires and jumprings.

GONE TRAVELING

I have to put the beads and polymer clay away for a few days. We are traveling to "Death Valley National Park", and will be away until April 7th. It is going to really warm up this next week, 90 degrees or so here in the Palm Springs area, so can just imagine how hot it will be in Death Valley. Polymer Pizzazz 2

Are you ready for a new book? I just purchased one called

"Polymer Pizzazz 2".

This book has 25 beautiful projects to create. Many of the projects were previously featured in Bead and Button and Art Jewelry magazines.

On page 37 is their Bandana Pattern Bracelet, my first project from the book. Here is my start with the beads. I'll post the finished bracelet when it is finished. Unfortunately it called for between 24-30 beads, I made 24 and it's not enough. Sooo, more beadmaking this evening.

Pheasant Feather Earrings

When recently asking my granddaughter what I could make for her, she drew me a picture of a necklace that had a feather as part of the focal piece. I started looking for some pretty feathers that I could use in some of my designs. On a recent visit to Layton, Utah I visited a Bead Store in that area and there were some very pretty Pheasant Feathers. I bought a bag and have been playing around with designs. I don't have your necklace finished, Madie, but I am working on it. Instead here are some earrings that I thought would be fun to wear. They are finished with copper findings. What do you think?

It's Time for the big reveal! My partner Ann Rishell sent me this wonderful stash of beads. So many that I really had a hard time deciding what to use. I chose to make just one design for this
reveal, but when I return home from snowy, Layton, Utah, where I am staying with my awesome grandson, Nick, I will post more designs.

And here is my Bead Soup...Ta Da!

The brown and black beads are polymer clay and so is the focal. I'm not sure what the beige beads are made of, maybe Ann can tell us. The clasp is brass in a beautiful flower shape. The necklace is approximately 20" long and the focal is about 1 1/2". The only beads I added were some onyx chips and gold seed beads.

Blog Bead Soup that is. This is the third time I have participated in Lori Anderson's Bead Soup Exchange, and I'm looking forward to the big reveal. Lori has over 200 bead and jewelry artists that are participating this time, and it has been a little overwhelming for her to put it all together. She is a great trooper though, and things are moving along just fine.

We are assigned an exchange partner and then asked to send them a Focal Piece, Clasp and any other beads we want to send so that they can put together a wearable piece of jewelry art. My exchange partner is

Knitting with Polymer Clay

Is this really knitted, or is there another way? Cindy Lietz has a video tutorial that solves the mystery. See what you can make with this interesting method using polymer clay. How about a cuff bracelet that looks like it has been knitted. Or pretty "knitted" buttons to fit on your just finished sweater. Your knitting guild members will be amazed. Make up a jazzy looking shawl pin with this "knitted" method. I can't wait to try this method. Check back in a week or so to see what I come up with.

Cindy Lietz Gingham Cane Tutorial

Cindy Lietz has inspired me again. I love these Gingham Canes. I'm not sure what I will be making out of them yet, but check in at my Artfire and Etsy shops and take a peek. I'll be posting something real soon. I can see earrings, pendants, hearts, and even buttons that you knitters and sewers can use on your projects.

For those of you who are not into making polymer clay beads or canes, these are not painted. The pattern was made from colors of polymer clay.

I wish all my followers and visitors a very Merry Christmas and good wishes to those of you that celebrate another holiday. I will be celebrating Christmas in Boise, Idaho with my son and his family, and will have the fun of sharing Christmas Eve celebrations with some less fortunate women, residents of "City Lights" in Boise. A home for women who are recovering, and some women who have the misfortune of being homeless. We will cook and serve them a nice Christmas dinner, and enjoy talking and spending time with them.

Food You Don't Have To Eat

Well, I've finally returned from a Fun Filled Family week!. Thanksgiving in Arizona, visiting with family in Utah and Nevada (lots of snow) and now getting back to reality. I just happened to leave my camera in Utah, so will have to plead with my dear hubby to let me use his to photograph my new projects.

I have a little boutique that I will be working on Monday with my Knitting Guild, and I'm making some really pretty polymer clay buttons. I'll add pictures when I can snag that camera.

In the meantime I thought I would post pictures of food I don't have to eat. (oh those extra pounds from Thanksgiving dinner). I am posting this a little early because I have an all day show at my Curves tomorrow and won't have time to do any posting. It's almost the 15th on the East Coast, so here we go.

I received this gorgeous necklace from my swap partner, Laurel Steven. I love the design of it and was hesitant to change it, but that's the name of this game, so see what I did with it below.

I removed the pink beads and selected some Goldstone beads because I thought it went well with the color of the Ladies dress on the pendant. I also shortened it a little and then reused the brass chain. Here is my redo.

Polymer Clay Faux Coral, Turquoise, Jade and Amber Bangle Bracelets

I have two craft shows coming up this weekend, and I have been really busy cooking my polymer clay pieces. These are my new bangle bracelets that I made to look like coral, turquoise, jade and amber. I really had fun making them. I used Carol Blackburn's book, Making Polymer Clay Beads, for my inspiration.

Giraffe Print Necklace

I have quite a few pieces of my jewelry that I have made in the polymer clay giraffe print cane. Animal prints are in vogue right now, and I really enjoy designing with the pattern. Here is a fun necklace strung on a buna cord. I used a Barbara McGuire mold for my design. I'm sure someone at the craft fair will enjoying getting this one.

Lori Anderson always comes up with such good ideas for interacting with fellow beaders and jewelry designers by holding fun "bead swaps". This time we are swapping a piece of jewelry that someone created but is either tired of or they haven't sold it within a certain timeframe. I am exchanging with Laurel Stevens and she sent me a wonderful necklace that I really like, and can't imagine how I can change it. But, I need to try. Coffee Anyone?

If you wonder why I am so chatty on my blog today it's because I am housebound for a week or so because of a case of the shingles. Fortunately it is a light case, but am told to avoid crowds for a week or so. So, luckily I can make pretty polymer clay pieces and blog along.

A friend of mine has a granddaughter that works at a coffee house and she asked if I could make her some earrings having to do with coffee. Soooo, thanks to Jessica and Susan Partain and their Polymer Clay Cookbook, I found some coffee cup earrings including the beans. Here is my finished project.

Lemon Slice earrings of Polymer Clay

I live in a warm desert climate, as I mentioned before, and the citrus trees love this area. We have beautiful grapefruit, orange, and yummy lemon trees brimming with fruit. Thinking about citrus, I decided to add to my polymer clay "food pieces" by making some cute "lemon slice" earrings. While doing this my mouth started watering for Lemonade. I know, it's not Summer right now, but in our warm desert sun Lemonade is always refreshing. My friend, Vicki Bensinger, has a recipe for "homemade" lemonade that you can find at her website. I've been a little slow on blogging this week as I have been busy getting ready for a "Harvest Boutique" in the Yucaipa, CA area sponsored by The International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, a division of the Masonic Lodge. I thought that since it was the Girls division sponsoring, that maybe they would appreciate some jewelry for Teens and Tweens. Here are a few things I've put together for the younger set, and will include some fun "Foodie" items made of polymer clay too. Look for pumpkin pie earrings, pretzel earrings, pizza pendant and more. The pendants at the bottom are awaiting their bails and rubber cords to finish.

Our Canadian Guests

I live in a nice warm desert climate, and in the winter we have wonderful people from Canada come to our valley and stay to enjoy our warm weather. They are affectionately called "Snow Birds". Well here are some other snow birds that follow them, "Canada Geese". Beautiful birds to watch, but you don't want to walk in the grass after they have been there for awhile, if you know what I mean.

Jessica and Susan Partain have a Polymer Clay book out called "The Polymer Clay Cookbook". In this book you can learn to make tiny food jewelry to whip up and wear, and they have a few "edible" recipes too. Here is my take on their "Cheeseburger Earrings". Looks good enough to eat, don't you think? It's even on a sesame seed bun.

Judy Haupin New Leaf Beads

Judy Haupin has a free tutorial featured on the Beading Daily website called New Leaf Beads that she used to design a very showy necklace. Here are a few of the beads I made using this tutorial, and I will post my necklace and other pieces when I get them all together.

The necklace can be worn two ways. One showing the colorful cane side and the other showing the gold, copper black side of the leaves. I can see this project using many different colors and canes. This is just a start.

I also intend to make some earrings using the leaves, and have made smaller leaves to use in a charm bracelet. This is a fun project, but labor intensive. Let me know what you think!

Bottle Cap Necklaces

I will be posting these necklaces on my etsy website shortly, so if you have a teen or tween that you need a gift for you can pick one up there.

The necklaces are made of polymer clay that I have put inside a soda bottle cap and added a little embellishment. They are strung on a self closing rubber cord. Sherri Haab features this technique in her book, "Clay So Cute".

Are We Having An Earthquake?

I asked myself, "Are we having an earthquake?", then realized it was just the street contractors tearing up my road, driveway and just about every entrance to my condo complex. We can't access our garage or driveway, and are parking on a street outside our community, walking to the car either in dirt or across the grassy area in our circle in the back of our condo. I think the title of my next piece of jewelry is going to be called "Bam Bam" for all the pounding and noise that is going on outside. :-)

Glass Addiction Swap

At last I finished my charms for the Glass Addiction. I had something entirely different planned, but I wasn't pleased with the finished project, so hurriedly put these together. Hearts are a favorite of mine, so hope everyone enjoys them. They are made of Polymer Clay using the "Coral" color required, and they have a UV Resin finish on the top. The color in this picture is not the true color of the charms. The findings are brass.

My Etsy Store is Open!

Many years ago I had a little store in Newport Beach, California. The name was
"A Little Bit of Everything". As a child, I always had fun playing "store", setting up my counter and selling little trinkets that I found around the house to my imaginary playmates. With my real store I got to experience the fun of really selling cute and fun items to real people, and shopping all the gift marts for just the right things to stock. Christmas was absolutely magical in the selling experience.

I am feeling a little of that magic right now as I open my first "Etsy" store, "Lorettas Boutique", and I don't have to shop the gift marts anymore (although that was fun), I have the pleasure of hand making the beautiful items I am featuring in my shop.

I have listed 3 sets of my Polymer clay bangle bracelets, and will add earrings, necklaces, rings, and maybe even some of my Knitted shag purses. Watch this blog for specials, some drawings, and a gift for one of my followers when I reach a goal that I will announce later.

Great-Granddaughter, Taryn, a little beauty, lives in Anchorage Alaska with her Mom and Dad so we don't get to see her often. But through the magic of pictures on cellphones and computers we can enjoy and watch her grow.

Bangle Bracelet Trio of Polymer Clay

A touch of Fall is in the air so I am leaning toward the Fall colors in my bangle bracelet line. I mixed a little polymer clay in colors of Fuschia, Orange, Ecru, Yellow, Green and Pearl and had fun making a striped cane that I liked for my bracelets. Here is what I came up with. I had a lot of the mix left over so I made some pendants, earrings and beads that I will show later.
